CATCH AND RELEASE
To assure survival of the fish, keep these points in mind:
Don't waste time. Quickly play and release fish. A fish played for too long may be too exhausted to recover.
Handle fish gently. Don't grip fish by the eyes or gills; use a firm grasp but don't squeeze too tightly. Never squeeze a fish around its middle.
Unhook carefully. Grab bend of hook and turn fly upside down so the point of the hook is pointing down toward the water.
Squeeze down barbs on hooks with pliers or use barbless hooks to reduce stress on fish and lower the risk of injuries. When deeply hooked, a fish's chance of survival is much better if the leader is cut and the hook is left in place.
Revive exhausted fish. Hold it upright in the water (heading upstream in streams) and move it back and forth to force water through its gills. When the fish revives and begins to swim normally, let it go to survive and challenge another angler.
